Nurturing Relationships, Nurturing a Call

For Saint John’s University of Minnesota student, Josh Bayshore, the summer months have provided him an opportunity to be of service to the young people who attend La Salle Academy in Manhattan, NY.

The past two summers, Josh, as part of the Contact program for the De Salle Christian Brothers has lived in community with the Brothers and worked as part of the Readiness Program for incoming students.

A native of Baltimore and graduate of Calvert Hall College High School, Josh’s discernment experience as part of the Contact program offers him a way to get to know the Brothers’ vocation through the experiences of daily life while ministering at La Salle, as well as throughout the year be walked with by a vocation director.

Summer has also been a great time for Brother Javier Castro, who spent the past year as an Aspirant with the Brothers (learn about the Stages of Formation) living and ministering at Calvert Hall. He was accepted into the regional Postulancy (official entrance to initial formation as a Brother).

During the District of Eastern North America’s summer gatherings, Brother Javier made promises. He will continue to live in community and serve at Calvert Hall. Part of Brother Javier’s summer ministry was a part of the baseball camp.

“My summer has been quite active. My favorite part has been helping coach in the baseball camp. The younger campers are extremely excited and have a lot of funny moments that fill my days with joy. A few of them will join Calvert Hall in the Fall. So I’m developing a nurturing relationship weeks before they report for their first day of high school,” said Brother Javier.

Additionally, Brother Javier had the opportunity this summer for two retreat experiences, one in Ocean City, NJ and one in Chicago, IL, as well as attend the Lasallian Diversity Equity Inclusion Belonging Institute at Saint Mary’s College.
