Discerners Participate in Summer Ministry

Summer ministry is an opportunity provided for young men in the Contact program, by the Brothers in the District of San Francisco New Orleans’ Office of Vocation Ministry.

The first-hand experience of Lasallian life aims to encourage the young men into deeper reflection on the Lasallian values of faith, service, and community. This summer three discerners participated in the summer ministry at Saint Mary’s College High School (SMCHS).

They participated in the school’s summer programs offered to SMCHS students. Their experience included assisting in classes, joining Brothers for presentations, and being present in other student activities.

“The students’ energy and enthusiasm were contagious, and my interactions with them played a significant role in my discernment, opening my eyes to the joy of education that has greatly impacted me in my own experiences. The support of the faculty and Contacts was invaluable as they created an environment that allowed me to share my gifts and talents,” shared one Contact.

Essential to the summer ministry is the discerners’ lived experience with the De La Salle Brothers in their community residence on campus. With the Brothers, the Contacts experienced faith and community by participating in morning and evening prayers, cooking dinner, having socials and meals, learning and playing recreational card games, all while sharing stories and conversations with each other.

“The time we had with the Brothers Community at Saint Mary’s College High School was a blessed opportunity to see how the Brothers live, teach, and follow God faithfully,” shared a Contact about his time in community, “the Brothers welcomed us with open arms to show us how they live as religious, and it was an amazing time…we were able to support teachers at the summer programs at the high school itself as well, which really showed us the potential we have to contribute to education. This opportunity showed me a beautiful path I can take in my life and lead to my future discernment.”

The whole experience of the summer ministry is viewed in the context of the discernment process within the Contact program where Contacts are accompanied in their reflection on God’s call in their life. Hopefully, the summer ministry will help in that reflection by providing a glimpse of how Lasallian spirituality is lived in a fraternal community and expressed through ministry.

“I was particularly touched by the warmth and hospitality of the community of Brothers, who went above and beyond to make me feel like part of their family. Their love and kindness will remain with me as I continue to discern my future. I am deeply grateful to the Office of Vocation Ministry for providing this enriching experience and look forward to seeing what the future holds as I continue my college journey and seek God’s guidance in my life,” shared another Contact.
