WHO ARE THE BROTHERS OF THE CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS?

We Brothers, in fidelity to the call of the Spirit and the charism of our Founder, consecrate ourselves to God in order to exercise, by association, our apostolic ministry of education.—(Adapted from The Rule of the Brothers of the Christian Schools)

The Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Christian Brothers, is a religious congregation of Catholic men who answer God’s call to serve those in need of a Christian and human education. For this purpose, the Brothers commit themselves to God and live in community “together and by association.” This commitment requires seeing reality with the eyes of faith, a life of prayer, strength of character, generosity, flexibility and the willingness to take risks.

St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, gave a new meaning to education by making it accessible to the poor and offering it to all as a sign of the Kingdom and as a means of salvation. The Christian school is the preferred setting for exercising the Lasallian mission. The Brothers also serve in other educational ministries that meet the needs of the marginalized sector of our society.

The congregation consists of 5,300 religious laymen with headquarters in Rome, Italy. Eight hundred Brothers serve in English-speaking North America.
